Born and raised in the picturesque region of Kulgam in South Kashmir, his journey from a humble background to becoming an epitome of valour and sacrifice is nothing short of extraordinary. As we delve into the contrasting lives of Lance Naik Nazir Ahmed Wani and the ruthless terrorist Burhan Wani, the distinction between their legacies becomes apparent: one of selfless service and protection, and the other of violence and destruction. Lance Naik Nazir Ahmed Wani's story is one of unwavering commitment to duty and a deep-rooted love for his nation. He had joined 162 Territorial Army (TA) Battalion in 2004 as an Ikhwan (surrendered terrorists who turned pro government and fought terrorism) where he displayed remarkable courage and exceptional skills. He fearlessly took on the perilous task of combating terrorism in one of the most volatile regions in India. Throughout his service he encountered numerous life-threatening situations. Yet, he remained undeterred, consistently displaying exemplary leadership and bravery in the face of danger. His commendable service to the Nation included a number of counter-terrorist operations, providing security to fellow soldiers and civilians alike, and successfully neutralizing several terrorists.

On November 25, 2018, while on attachment with 34 Rashtriya Rifles (RR), the column of soldiers of which Lance Naik Nazir Wani was a part, became engaged in a fierce encounter with terrorists in Hirapur village of Kashmir’s Shopian district. Fully aware of the imminent danger, Lance Naik Wani’s indomitable spirit reached its zenith and he fought from the front with exceptional gallantry. Despite being heavily outnumbered, he refused to back down, fighting ferociously to protect his comrades and innocent civilians. During the intense firefight, he sustained grievous injuries, yet he valiantly continued his battle against the terrorists. In a remarkable act of selflessness, he shielded a fellow soldier from enemy gunfire, saving his life but sacrificing his own. Lance Naik Nazir Ahmed Wani succumbed to his injuries, leaving behind a legacy that will forever inspire generations to come. As we honour the extraordinary life of Lance Naik Nazir Ahmed Wani, we cannot help but draw a stark contrast with the infamous terrorist Burhan Wani, who brought immense suffering and sorrow to innocent lives. Lance Naik Nazir Ahmed Wani rose from humble beginnings to become an intransigent force, a symbol of bravery and heroism and chose to serve his nation and protect his people, becoming a "True Wani" whereas, the terrorist Burhan Wani adopted a path of barbarity and carnage and eventually died a coward’s death at the hands of the Security Forces. While one embraced a path of bravery and selflessness, the other succumbed to darkness and destruction. This difference between both highlights the inherent power of choice. Lance Naik Nazir Ahmed Wani's story is a tale of triumph, sacrifice, and steadfast dedication. From humble beginnings, he rose to become a symbol of bravery and heroism. His commitment to preserving peace and security resonates deeply within the hearts of millions across the nation, showcasing the power of an individual's indefatigable resolve to uphold the values of righteousness and justice. His legacy serves as a powerful reminder that heroism can be found in the most unlikely of places and that true greatness lies in selfless service to humanity.
