RUN FOR HONOUR: GANDERBAL MARATHON 2026

Updated: 2 days ago

In a powerful display of unity, remembrance, and community spirit, the Indian Army successfully organized the Paratrooper Shabir Ahmad Malik, Kirti Chakra (Posthumous) Ganderbal Half Marathon 2026 under the aegis of Counter Insurgency Force. The event, held on March 29, witnessed the participation of thousands of enthusiastic runners from across the region, cutting across age groups and backgrounds.

The marathon was conducted as a tribute to Shabir Ahmad Malik, a decorated commando of Special Forces and a proud son of Ganderbal, who laid down his life during an anti-terror operation in Kupwara in 2009. By dedicating the event to a local hero, the Indian Army reinforced its enduring commitment to honouring sacrifice while inspiring future generations.

The event commenced from the historic Qamariya Ground under clear morning skies and was ceremonially flagged off by Senior Army officials alongside Army officials and members of the district administration. The 21-kilometre route offered a unique blend of challenge and scenic beauty, passing through prominent landmarks such as Chapergund, the iconic Wayil Bridge, and the townships of Lar and Barsoo, before culminating at the picturesque Sainik School Manasbal near the serene Manasbal Lake.

Participants were greeted with a festive and energetic atmosphere at the finish line, symbolizing not just the completion of a race but the celebration of collective spirit and resilience. The Indian Army ensured robust logistical arrangements throughout the event, including well-placed medical aid posts, hydration stations, and safety measures to guarantee a secure and smooth experience for all runners.

Beyond its sporting dimension, the marathon served as a significant platform for strengthening civil-military relations. The large turnout of civilians, especially youth, reflected growing engagement with fitness initiatives and an increasing sense of partnership between the armed forces and the local population. The event stood as a testament to the Army’s ongoing people-centric approach, fostering goodwill and reinforcing the “Jawan and Awaam” bond in the region.

A particularly poignant moment of the event was the felicitation ceremony held during the closing function. The parents of the fallen soldier, Smt Raja Bano and Mr Ghulam Hasan Malik, were honoured by the Chief Guest. The emotional tribute symbolized the nation’s deep gratitude for the supreme sacrifice made by their son and resonated strongly with all present.

Born in Dab village and an alumnus of Sainik School Manasbal, Paratrooper Malik’s life and legacy continue to inspire countless young individuals across Jammu and Kashmir. His story embodies courage, dedication, and selfless service, values that the marathon sought to highlight and promote among participants.

The event also highlighted Ganderbal’s growing potential as a hub for large-scale sporting activities. By seamlessly integrating fitness, community participation, and national pride, the marathon showcased how such initiatives can contribute to both social cohesion and youth empowerment. The vibrant participation underscored a positive shift towards active lifestyles and constructive engagement among the region’s youth.

In essence, the Ganderbal Half Marathon 2026 was more than a sporting event—it was a celebration of sacrifice, a reaffirmation of unity, and a step forward in building lasting trust between the Indian Army and the people. Through initiatives like these, the Army continues to extend its role beyond security, contributing meaningfully to community development and nation-building.

As the runners crossed the finish line against the backdrop of Manasbal’s tranquil waters, the message was clear: remembrance and resilience go hand in hand, and together, they pave the way for a stronger, more united future.
