CARE BEYOND BOUNDARIES: A FREE MEGA MEDICAL CAMP AT MUHRI

People living in remote areas can sometimes find access to proper healthcare difficult. Distance, limited medical facilities and cost of treatment can make even a routine health check-up a challenge. It is in these areas that community-based medical camps can really make a difference by bringing doctors, medicines and essential health services closer to the people.

Keeping in view this requirement, Indian Army organised a Free Mega Medical Camp at Muhri, a remote border village in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district in coordination with Sunrise Multispecialty Hospital, Kupwara and ODIC (Outreach and Drop-In Centre), Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment. The camp was a venue for local residents to consult with medical professionals and receive a variety of health care services without having to travel far.

The local community response was encouraging. A total of 523 people attended the camp, demonstrating the significance of accessible healthcare in the region. Residents of different age groups were given consultations, medical tests and other services. For many families the camp was a convenient way to get to health issues that might otherwise have been put off.

A team of 19 medical specialists offered a wide range of services to the participants. General consultations dealt with common health concerns and paediatric services focused on children’s health needs. Residents were given dental consultations, a chance to deal with oral health problems that are often overlooked.

The camp also extended beyond basic consultations. Blood tests and ECG services enabled medical professionals to assess patients more closely and HIV and Syphilis screening offered an opportunity for early detection and increased health awareness. Counselling and outreach services added another important dimension to the camp by helping people understand their health needs and the importance of timely medical attention. Those who needed free medicines were also given them.

The essence of the initiative was that it brought together several aspects of healthcare in one place. Medical camp is more than simply curing an illness on the day. It can also help people better manage their health, seek medical advice earlier and be more aware of preventative care. Specifically, screening and counselling can help people understand that regular health checks are an important part of staying well.

The joint efforts of the Indian Army, Sunrise Multispecialty Hospital and the ODIC also demonstrated the value of synergy for the betterment of the local communities. Such efforts can help close gaps in access to health care and create opportunities for people to receive professional medical attention close to home.

The Free Mega Medical Camp at Muhri was thus more than a one-day medical outreach program. The initiative offered hands-on support to the community, with 523 locals benefiting from health care services while raising awareness and timely care. For the people of Muhri it was a reminder of how healthcare is most meaningful for people where they live and when different organisations come together with a shared purpose: to care for the community.
