A HEALTHIER GANDERBAL, A STRONGER KASHMIR: INDIAN ARMY’S INITIATIVE IN ZAZUNA

The beautiful Valley of Kashmir is known not only for its mountains, rivers and natural beauty but also for the warmth, resilience and strong community spirit of its people. Access to timely medical care in villages located far from major towns can make a significant difference in the lives of families. An inspiring example of service and cooperation was witnessed in Zazuna village in the Badampura area of Ganderbal district, where the Indian Army organised a medical camp under Operation Sadbhavana in collaboration with the local Primary Health Centre (PHC). This initiative conveyed a simple yet powerful message: good health, compassion and public service are essential for building a stronger and happier Kashmir.
During the camp, a total of 267 people received medical consultations, basic healthcare services and medicines. For many families living in nearby and remote villages, the initiative provided an opportunity to consult healthcare professionals closer to home. Transport arrangements for residents coming from remote areas also helped people access medical facilities. For elderly residents, women, children and families who may find it difficult to travel to distant healthcare centres, such support can make basic medical services more accessible. The camp demonstrated how coordinated efforts can bring healthcare closer to people and encourage families to become more aware of their health and well-being.
The initiative also highlighted the importance of cooperation between the Indian Army and local civilian healthcare institutions. The participation of the Primary Health Centre brought together the experience and resources of different stakeholders for a common purpose, serving the community. Such efforts can strengthen public confidence in healthcare services and encourage people to seek medical advice whenever necessary. Operation Sadbhavana provides a platform for positive engagement between the Army and local residents through initiatives focused on community welfare and humanitarian assistance. In a region like Kashmir, where families living in remote areas may face geographical challenges, efforts to improve access to essential services hold particular significance.
For the people of Kashmir, the message of such initiatives extends beyond a single medical camp. A healthy community forms the foundation of education, employment, entrepreneurship and social development. When children receive timely healthcare, they are better placed to attend school and participate in daily activities. When elderly people and other family members have access to medical advice, families gain greater confidence in managing their health. Awareness of preventive healthcare, personal hygiene, nutrition and timely medical consultations can further contribute to building healthier communities. Medical camps can also encourage residents to remain connected with local healthcare institutions and seek appropriate follow-up treatment whenever required. These small but meaningful steps can collectively contribute to the development of a healthier and more prosperous Kashmir.
The people of Ganderbal have always been an important part of Kashmir’s rich social and cultural identity. The spirit of cooperation demonstrated in Zazuna offers an inspiring example of how public institutions, healthcare workers and local communities can work together for the common good. The participation of local residents in the camp and the collective efforts of the organisers highlight the importance of trust, accessibility and service. Such initiatives become more effective when supported by continued cooperation with established healthcare centres, regular health awareness programmes and responsible community participation.
The medical camp organised in Zazuna is a positive reminder that development is not measured only by roads, buildings or other infrastructure, it is also reflected in the facilities and support that reach ordinary families. When healthcare reaches the doorstep of a village, it brings more than medical assistance, it also brings trust, dignity and hope. Through such initiatives, the Indian Army, local healthcare institutions and the people of Kashmir can continue to strengthen their partnership in support of community welfare. The shared goal is clear, a healthier Ganderbal, empowered families and a Kashmir where every community has greater opportunities to live with dignity, confidence and the hope of a brighter future.
